Casimir Launches ‘Monday Night Steakhouse’

I mentioned in April that Casimir had been sold & spoke a bit about what changes could be expected. It seems that the new owner has choosen a direction as I got an email from Type A Media on Wednesday (they seem to represent a few East Village & LES restaurants, they clued me up on Bondi Road’s Tattoosdays). From the release:
Who wouldn’t want to treat themselves to a decadent steakhouse dinner? However, steakhouse prices have put this luxury out of reach for more and more diners. But not anymore! East Village French bistro Casimir has introduced Monday Night Steakhouse – a weekly special featuring every steak on its menu for only $9.95!
Starting Monday, July 25, 2011 Monday Night Steakhouse is set to tempt your taste buds without sacrificing your budget. Indulge in 12 ounces of favorites such as ribeye and skirt steak, filet mignon, steak tartare, the juicy Casimir hamburger and even a grilled pork chop – all for the wallet-friendly price of $9.95.
I’ll admit that this looks like a great deal. I’m a huge fan of the steak tartare (although I think that Goat Town does a superior version), the steak there is great (make sure to get the pepper sauce) & the burger is pretty decent. Diners that have been going to Casimir for a while will notice changes though. Since the new owner has taken over, there has been a mass defection by long-time employees.
I was there on Sunday & it just felt different. I didn’t recognize anyone & the service at the bar was pretty bad (the bartender was obviously new & still figuring the place out). Plus they have a new point of sale system that seems to not be working quite right. I got the carpaccio which was delicious as usual so it seems that the kitchen staff is still intact. Still, a $10 Monday night dinner is a great addition to the East Village. As a side note, I heard that Casimir got a C on their initial DOH inspection, but now have a ‘Rating Pending’ sign up. I can’t verify that this is 100% correct, but we’ll see what happens.
Casimir: 108 Ave. between 6th & 7th street. Further info on Casimir here.
