The Mighty McRib

Personally, I hate McDonald’s. I do, however, appreciate Ray Kroc’s vision in taking a page out of Henry Ford’s playbook & turning restaurants basically into Model T assembly lines. Open Kitchens (Degustation, Cafe Gray, Peasant, etc.)? Ray Kroc invented that. My main gripe with McDonald’s is that I’m fundamentally opposed to fast-food & my local McDonald’s (102 1st Avenue) is possibly the worst branch ever. Staffed by dimwits (not all of them) & besieged by OAPs & beggars, it’s just a really horrible experience. And I haven’t even mentioned the McGriddle yet. So when I see commercials pimping out the McRib I tend to cringe, but oddly I’m fascinated.
So with a heavy heart & much trepidation, I decided to try it for the first time in many years. It took me a while to build up the moxy to tuck into the damn thing. Luckily I was a few beers in & I had Dutch Courage. Initially I was impressed. The bun tasted great, the BBQ sauce was smoky & tangy (as advertised in the packaging), it seemed like a win-win situation. pretty quickly though, I realized something was off. I couldn’t taste the meat. The liquid smoke they put into the sauce totally kills your taste buds, so no other flavors ring through. Only when you get a bit of the onion & pickle does that change.
So, I’m not a fan of the McRib, I love the concept, but my aversion to fast food might skew my judgement. However, there is a silver lining to this story. Steven Reese, the brilliant mad scientist that helms Korzo Haus deconstructed (& then deep fried) McRibs for the bartenders at 7B.
Seen above is 2 McRib patties, lined with cheese, bacon, pickles & onions then deep fried in Korzo’s amazing Langos dough. If there was ever a reason to get a McRib or two, this must be it. I haven’t tried Steven’s insane concoction, but from what I’ve heard it’s pretty amazing/disturbing! So in the end, the McRib wins & I’m lovin’ it. I was trying to figure out a name: McKorzo or McAwesome? Let me know your thoughts.

Despite how lowbrow/despicable fast food may be, it still plays a part in the food landscape, so I’m just keepin’ it real!!!! 🙂
