Mermaid Inn

It’s really hard to find good seafood (particularly oysters), but we’re pretty blessed here in the East Village. One of my favorites is Mermaid Inn (96 2nd Avenue between 5th & 6th Streets). They have another location in the UWS & an Oyster Bar in Greenwich Village as well.
Open since October 2002, this place has been a staple of seafood lovers for quite some time. It was pretty busy when I went, so we were seated in the rear. We decided to start with the Crispy Rhode Island Calamari ($10) served with red sauce. I’m sure everyone has a calamari horror story, but these guys were delicious. Crispy & not rubbery or dry at all. The red sauce was nice & tart as well.
I got the Pan Seared Lemon Sole which was served over mashed potatoes with watercress, butter, lemon & truffle oil. Really damn good! It was quite a large portion/filling as well, so I was very satisfied!
Unfortunately this is not on the regular menu & I can’t remember how much it cost.
My buddy got the Fish Tacos which he really enjoyed. They were deep fried & served with plenty of guacamole, tomatoes & cilantro. All in all it was a great meal & I will be going back. I will, however recommend that you try the oysters here, they’re really good. The Lobster Roll isn’t bad either, but I think there are better options in the ‘hood (See Luke’s Lobster).
