Mermaid Inn (96 2nd Avenue between 5th & 6th Streets; review here) is having a crab boil this Labor Day weekend. 20 ‘clams’ gets you crab & a mallet. There are also $20 carafes of wine & $15 pitchers of beer. Runs Saturday the 4th, Sunday the 5th & Monday the 6th. Send summer out with a BANG! & the satisfying crunch of crushed crustacean!
Sake Bar Satsko

I’m really surprised it’s taken me so long to write a review of Sake Bar Satsko (202 East 7th Street between Ave. B & C), particularly because I live across the street & seem to spend a lot of time eating & drinking there. It’s a tiny sliver of a place & it took me a few weeks to actually figure out that it was a restaurant & bar (Beer, Wine, Sake & Soju; a Korean liquor similar to Vodka, but sweeter).
Republic

I recently went to Republic with my Mom for an early dinner. I haven’t been there in a while, so I was really looking forward to the meal. It was pretty empty, so we were seated immediately. Normally I order the curried duck noodles (which are really tasty), but this time I decided to opt for a bento box. Read more
Zaitzeff

I had some coupons from InBundles so I took my parents to Zaitzeff (18 Avenue B between 2nd & 3rd streets). I had been there before & tried the BLT, but this was my first time checking out the burgers. It being a rainy Monday, the place really wasn’t busy. I opted for the Quarter Pound Kobe Beef burger with avocado (my Mom got the same) & my Dad got the sliders. The menu said Kobe, but I’m pretty sure that it was wagyū, not that I minded at all. Although the place was pretty much empty, they were doing a brisk amount of deliveries so the wait for our burgers was kind of long. However, once they arrived, we realized it was well worth the wait. There was minimal seasoning on the beef, allowing us to salt/pepper to taste. As with all kobe & wagyū the meat was really marbled which made the burger really juicy. Read more
Pio Pio

I love chicken as much (if not more) than the next guy so I jumped at the chance for a free (belated birthday) meal at Pio Pio (210 East 34th Street between 2nd & 3rd). Pio Pio is a chain of Peruvian restaurants that do one thing; pollos a la brasa (rotisserie chicken) & boy do they do it well! I’ve had delivery from them before, but DJ informed me that the dine in experience would be far superior.

This was just too choice to ignore. Diable Royale Este (167 Avenue A @ 11th Street) will begin serving up beer popsicles! Take a can of Tecate, add simple syrup, lime & a wooden stick then freeze for 4 days. Your bartender will cut the can in half with a serrated knife. BINGO, instant Hopsicle, Genius! Ruby’s Bar & Grill

It took me about 22 years of living in NYC to finally make it out to Coney Island & when I did, I headed straight for Ruby’s (1213 Riegelmann Boardwalk). This place takes ‘Dive Bar’ to a whole new level & throws in a side of Coney Island Boardwalk & sea views. Mismatched furniture, a jukebox on it’s last legs & no-nonsense, gray-haired bartenders complete the look. Read more

Barbounia

This post is a few weeks late, but I’ll try to remember the meal as accurately as possible. Back in Early June, we took my Dad to dinner at Barbounia (250 Park Avenue South at 20th Street) for his birthday. I’d never been there before, but my brother knows one of the partners, Alon and recommended the place. It’s a pretty swanky Greek/Mediterranean joint & was packed to the gills by the time we got there so unfortunately we weren’t able to get the seat by the open doors that we wanted (even though we had made reservations & requested said table).
