Food & Drink recommendations straight from the East Village, New York City

Ten Ten

Posted on | February 6, 2011 | No Comments

I hate to say it, but I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to trust my parents’ dining recommendations again. A few weeks ago they ate at Ten Ten (413 2nd Avenue at 24th Street) & raved about how nice they were & how good the meal was. We decided to order delivery from Ten Ten recently on a very snowy night. Station Diner

Posted on | January 30, 2011 | No Comments

I’m adding this entry because I carry my camera everywhere & insist on taking pictures of any food that I do eat.  I rang in 20011 in Carroll Gardens at Brooklyn Social, a few hours after my epic first meal at Goat Town.  After a lot of booze & a bar crawl through the Gowanus area, we had planned on starting the New Year right, with a disgusting meal at McDonald’s (I make a point to never eat fast food & one of the people in our group hadn’t been there in 16 years), but luckily reason prevailed & we went to Station Diner (224 4th Ave, between Union St & President St).  It was full of people trying to get some grub before going to bed & us, eating to power through. Butchering Demo & Meal @ Back Forty

Posted on | January 29, 2011 | 2 Comments

One of my go-to restaurants in the East Village, Back Forty (190 Avenue B @ 12th Street, coverage here) will be offering a lamb butchering demo by chef Shanna Pacifico (check out this awesome video of her butchering beef on Food Curated).  A small group of 12 will watch Shanna butcher an entire lamb then offer tips on cooking.  After the class you’ll enjoy a four course meal.

$130 includes the demo, food, beer & wine, all inclusive.  The class runs from 3:30-6pm, the meal from 6-8pm.  More info here.

Life Cafe

A few weeks ago, Life Cafe (343 East 10th Street at Avenue B) had a competition on Twitter (@LifeCafe), it was a simple multiple choice question & if you got it right, you won a free bottle of champagne.  Well, I answered correctly & descended on the place with a few friends for dinner. Read more

Brunch at Jane

Bloody Mary at JaneThere are plenty of places to go to brunch in the East Village, but I traveled to Greenwich Village with a friend to check out Jane for some Bloody Marys & food.  I’ve been there before for dinner a long time ago, so I was excited to check out brunch there, particularly because I know the chef, Justin.  It’s a large, open space & was busy yet not crowded when we arrived.

Food Parc

Posted on | January 25, 2011 | No Comments

Way out of my normal stomping grounds & with possibly the shakiest camera in existence, I headed up to Food Parc (851 Avenue of the Americas at West 30th Street) for some late night food & drinks.  I had never been there before or even heard of it.  I was pleasantly surprised  to find a bright, modern indoor/outdoor food court. Goat Town

Posted on | January 25, 2011 | No Comments

After the awesome New Year’s Eve dinner (review here) I had at Goat Town (511 East 5th Street between Avenue A & B), I knew that I had to go back to check out the regular menu.  I recently found out that Gotham is Anglo-Saxon for Goat Town, so I’m guessing that that’s where the restaurant gets it’s name from.  My brother & I took our Mom there for her birthday.   They’ve recently added new sign posts outside (pictured to the left).  It was a Thursday & there was quite a line, but we were seated in one of the tiled booths after about 20 minutes.  While I do they they look cool, they are a bit hard on the lower back if you try to lean back too far. Lunch At Vandaag (Closed)

Posted on | January 22, 2011 | 2 Comments

[Looking at the pictures, you might think I mean Liquid Lunch, but trust me, I don’t!]

Funnily enough, the first time I came to Vandaag was at lunch, I’ve somehow managed to post my reviews in reverse order; Dinner here, Dessert here.  It was pretty empty (actually I think that there was only one other person in there), so we took a seat at the bar, smelling the baked goods from the bakery, while the daytime manager told us a bit about the restaurant.  My friend had been there before, so most of this was for my benefit.  The space is large with tables at the back & along the walls.  You almost feel as if they could put more seats in.  There’s a lot of booze on the walls & several beers (both bottle & tap) that I had never heard of, but we were more than happy to dive into the unknown. Yaffa Cafe

Posted on | January 20, 2011 | 1 Comment

Yaffa Cafe MuralThis is a bit of a nostalgic post for me as I used to go to Yaffa Cafe (97 Saint Marks Pl at 1st Avenue) a lot when I first moved into the ‘hood in late 2001.  I preferred it over nearby 7A & Sidewalk Cafe for late night (they’re 24 hours) food.

I returned a few days ago after midnight & not much has changed at the place.  I’m not exactly sure how to describe the decor, it really has to be seen to be fully understood.  Words just don’t do it justice!  The menu is large & has plenty of dishes with Mediterranean influences as well as lots of vegetarian offerings.  We sat at the zebra & leopard print booth at the front & got started.
