Idle Hands Taking Over Station B
Posted on | November 8, 2013 | No Comments
Idle Hands, the “Bourbon, Beer & Rock” bar that has been in the basement of 25 Avenue B for the past few years will be taking over the upstairs bar with was previously Station B. Word has it that it’ll be pretty much business as usual with the upstairs having the same excellent selection of whiskey & bourbon as well as serving serving food (the menu will be slightly revamped). 4 of the 6 tap beers that they had downstairs will be available upstairs & there are some rumors that downstairs might turn into an event/party space (fans of the Wednesday night beer tastings will be happy to hear this).
The space (formerly Save The Robots, Guernica & Club Midway) was rather famously torn to shreds by The Village Voice’s Robert Siestema in May of 2011 and reinvented itself as a less-douchey Station B. Honestly, I think this is a good thing for the neighborhood.
Idle Hands will be open & showing NFL games this Sunday.
Idle Hands: 25 Avenue B between 2nd & 3rd Sts.
Boulton & Watt

Like many other East Villagers I was sad to see Nice Guy Eddies close. The KISS mural outside was a bit of a neighborhood landmark, the food wasn’t the best (I was a fan of the wings) and the place was pretty dingy, but it was a chill place to get a beer & watch some sports. Neighborhoods change so I figured that a cocktail bar or an upscale restaurant would move in and that I’d hate it, not so with Boulton & Watt.
As soon as you walk in, you’ll notice that gone is the dive sports bar decor in favor of a much more industrial look (steampunk anyone?) with belt driven fans as well as exposed brick and duct work. Gothamist calls it ‘old timey‘, I’m not sure if I’d agree with that, but I do think the place looks great. Read more

Mighty Quinn’s BBQ
Posted on | February 14, 2013 | 2 Comments
Normally when I think of good barbecue the first thing that comes to mind is a rundown old shack down south with a potbellied pitmaster that has been smoking meat for the best part of his life, not the epicenter of the East Village. Mighty Quinn’s BBQ (which began at Smorgasburg) hopes to change that with it’s first brick & mortar location in the former Vandaag space.
I went to check the place out with a friend on opening day (hence the open garage door) in December & there was already a buzz about the place. Gone are Vandaag’s bright colors, but the layout is still very similar except for a large communal table which makes up most of the rear dining area. The smell of smoked meat hits you in the face as soon as you walk in (building residents have already filed complaints) & trust me, it’s enough to get your mouth watering. Read more

Aurora

When I started this blog just over 3 years ago I chose (what I thought was) a clever name and planned to review the area that I live in solely, but there’s so much great food in this, the most amazing of cities, that I’d be doing everyone a disservice if I didn’t branch out every once in a while.
I don’t venture out to Williamsburg that often, but a friend had been raving so much about the food at Aurora that I had to check it out. The space is really quaint, loads of wood & an awesome conservatory & outdoor seating. There was a wedding reception happening when I went there, so we ended up sitting at the bar which worked out just fine. Read more
BrisketTown

Hidden behind a unique wooden door lies what I can only describe as the Holy Grail of Meat. Several weeks after my visit to Daniel Delaney’s pop-up BrisketLab (more on that awesome day here), they’ve opened their first brick & mortar location in Williamsburg. We had pre-ordered 3lbs of meat, so we were guaranteed to eat (they are open from 6:30 till they run out), but we decided to arrive early nonetheless. We managed to snag a large table for the four of us which was lucky as the place filled out really quickly. Read more
St. Dymphna’s

Reminding me of my school years in England, St. Dymphna’s brings an awesome Irish flair to the East Village. Ice-cold Guinness, a no nonsense menu & an awesome staff totally round out this Irish Pub in the East Village. I’ve been going there for a few years & the place just seems to get better every time I visit. I’m a sucker for Guinness and fish & chips, so I was really happy with my first visit where I had double portions of both. Read more
Does Groupon Mislead Customers?

I’m a sucker for those discount deal websites. Yes, I get a dozen emails from them a day, but every once in a while I find something that I’m genuinely interested in. As you can imagine, I lean towards the deals for restaurants in my area. I’ve bought loads of these things and yes, plenty have expired without me using them, but I’ve had bad meals, good meals & a few exceptional meals using these coupons. Read more
5th Street Deli Opens On Ave. C
Posted on | November 26, 2012 | No Comments
Last week, 5th St. Deli opened at 66 Avenue C (sharing the building with Casa Adela) so I stopped by to check it out. I did a bit of research Googling & found out that this was the former home of Azukar Deli. It’s basically your average deli/bodega with a counter offering breakfast, sandwiches & soups and plenty of drink cabinets (they will be selling beer). Avenue C is saturated with delis; one down the street at 44 Avenue C, E&S Wholesome Foods, Alphabet City Deli in the surrounding area.
Hey, at least it’s not a Starbucks! Hopefully they’ll do well.
The staff were friendly & let me snap a few pictures.
