Vinegar Hill House
Posted on | December 29, 2011 | No Comments
Named after a small, largely unknown, area near DUMBO, Vinegar Hill House can be pretty hard to find. It’s quite a walk from the York Street F stop, so I decided to take a cab. Even my driver had a tough time finding the place. Once I got there though, things got even more confusing as there’s no sign (just a number). Finally I found my way in & headed to the private dining room downstairs. The place looks great; rustic with the feeling of an old farmhouse & an awesome fireplace. Read more

While I hate to see restaurants close, I guess that there’s only so much room in the city. When Satsko Eldridge shut its doors in February, it gave Chef Zoe Feigenbaum (from Bravo TV’s Chef Academy) the opportunity to take over the space. I’ll admit that I didn’t know much about the new restaurant & the chef, but I was interested to see what they had done with the layout. Gone is the wood exterior which makes for a much brighter. The bar is a bit smaller now which makes it a lot easier to get around. Ok, now on to the food. Read more

Australian restaurant the Sunburnt Cow was shut by cops last night for “Criminal sale and possession of controlled substances – marijuana.” Today they released this statement:
On Thursday, December 15th, The Sunburnt Cow was closed due to suspected illegal drug activity taking place on the premises. This activity comes as a shock to the entire Moo Life Group family and is not something that we endorse, condone or had prior knowledge of. We are currently working with the New York City Police Department to ensure that justice is served so we can get back to serving the public very soon. The health and safety of our patrons is a priority to us and we will do everything we can in order to make sure that our establishments support that mission.

A few weeks ago I mentioned that a new restaurant was opening in the former Mara’s Homemade spot on 6th Street. I had a chance to check the place out last night & I’ll admit that I was very impressed. It’s really hard to believe that this is the same space, gone are the purple & yellow in favor of clean white walls & hanging herbs. The place looks great. Read more
Shelsky’s Smoked Fish
Posted on | December 15, 2011 | 2 Comments
My friend Peter Shelsky opened a smoked fish store in June of this year. He took a page out of the playbooks of both Russ & Daughters and Zabar’s and set up his appetizing shop in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn. This gave people on this side of the river a place to buy smoked fish & other Jewish dishes without having to travel into Manhattan. The store’s motto is “no more schlepping…” & it makes total sense. If you haven’t noticed, I’m a massive fan of oysters. There’s just something about the process that has a special place in my heart. We’re blessed to have a bunch of great oyster spots in the East Village, but newcomer Upstate has jumped in feet first & made quite an impression. Read more

Scanwiches At JS55 Gallery

I’ve been a massive fan of Jon Chonko’s art project & blog Scanwiches. The process seems pretty simple; buy or make a sandwich, cut it in half, lay it on a scanner, scan. Sounds easy, right, but Jon’s work is so detailed & startlingly beautiful that I’m sure it takes some time & effort.
I was delightled to find out that JS55 Gallery in the LES was displaying 11 of his prints & a video of Jon at work. I went to check it out & I was pretty impressed. I had a hard time figuring out how he assembled some of the larger, more outlandish sandwiches. His work will be on display till December 11th, so get down there & check it out!

The Brooklyn Star

I don’t travel to Brooklyn that much, but dinner at The Brooklyn Star with friends seemed too good to pass up. I was busy eating junk food at home when I got a text inviting me to dinner. Obviously, I had to look at the menu online first, but once I saw Fried Pig Tail, I was sold. After a short hop on the L rain (which was thankfully running), we arrived at the restaurant which was pretty quiet for 8pm on a Friday. Read more

Bond Street Revisited

I’ve been going to Bond Street for about 10 years now. Opting for the downstairs lounge as friends of mine have worked there, I’ve always had a good time. Not to be cheating on my East Village sushi mainstay, Takahachi, but Bond St. takes it to another level entirely. My last two visits with my brother have been nothing short of mind blowingly good.
