I’ve been watching this space for quite some time so I finally decided to bite the bullet & went for dinner on my Dad’s birthday. It was a Wednesday at 8:30 and the place was already packed. We got a seat in the corner by the window & started studying the menu. It’s not particularly extensive, but you can tell that the focus is on the handmade pasta done in house by Chef Blanca Ricon. Updated: Click here for info on the 2012 event.
I suppose with this year’s East Village Eats just around the corner (info here), it was time that I wrote a recap of the awesome time that I had the year before. It was 8 months almost to the day ago, but I took loads of pictures & several pages of notes, so I’ll try to make this as short & direct as possible. Read more
‘Kick-Off Coffee Program’ at Vandaag?
Posted on | June 12, 2011 | 2 Comments
I found this image recently while surfing the internet (as we all do sometimes) & I’ll admit that I’m somewhat intrigued. I love coffee, I never have a bad time at Vandaag (reviews) & it seems that the speakers (tasters, roasters & baristas) know what they’re doing. Problem is, I can’t find any information on this event online (correction, here’s the Facebook Event Page, thanks to Todd at The Local East Village). It looks legit, but we’ll have to wait & see.
Anyway, this Thursday June 16 from 2-4pm, Vandaag will be hosting talks on roasting styles & the future of coffee. If you’re a coffee fanatic like I am, check it out!
Vandaag: 103 2nd Avenue at 6th Street.
East Village Eats Tasting Tour

Updated: Click here for info on the 2012 event.
First of all, let me say that I have nothing to do with the organization of this amazing tasting tour lined up for next Saturday. I was just luckily enough to start a blog of the same name a few months before the 1st tour last year. This is organized by the awesome Fourth Arts Block who have teamed up with Thrillist for 2011. The price is even cheaper this year; a mere $29 for food or booze at 12 of the most exciting & innovative bars & restaurants that the East Village has to offer. Festivities kick off at 12:30-5pm Saturday June 18 when you get your official pass & map. If it’s anything like the tour last year (read here), YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS THIS.
I don’t want to go into too much detail, but here are some of the participants;
Swift
MONO+MONO*
Jimmy’s No. 43*
Cucina di Pesce*
Hecho en Dumbo*
Destination Bar
Idle Hands
Northern Spy Food Co.
Ballaro
Korzo Haus
FAB Cafe
La Lucha
(*Denotes returning participant) Tickets via Thrillist.
SOS Chefs Closes
Posted on | June 11, 2011 | 2 Comments
I’m not sure how the hell I missed this, but on June 1st, EVGrieve reported that SOS Chefs, a high-end chef supplier on Avenue B has closed. I used to love looking through the shop when it first opened, but I did think that the ingredients were a bit on the expensive side. Still it’s sad to lose a business in the area.
The owners are ‘going to take some time to discover new things’, but I hope that this won’t take them too far from the East Village as they were always extremely nice.

Russ & Daughters Celebrates Herring
Posted on | June 6, 2011 | No Comments
Apparently it’s Herring Season! Russ & Daughters on Houston Street, home of (what is in my opinion) the best bagels, Lox & smoked fish is throwing a bash at the Astor Center on June 28th. The short 4-5 week timeline where herring are at their optimum means that this is a chance not to be missed. Anything involving Russ & Daughters is enough to get me excited, but this event is taken to a whole new level by the fact that the insanely talented April Bloomfield (The Spotted Pig, John Dory, The Breslin, etc. etc.) will be making a dish for this feast. Marinated, salted, smoked, pickled, the event promised pretty much every way herring can be served. Tickets also include cocktail pairings.
The fish is provided by New Catch Holland Herring, tickets are $75 & available online & at Russ & Daughters. If you can’t make it to the event, the herring is still for sale at the shop & online; $4.49 per herring or $39.95 for a tray of 10.

Luca Bar Seized
Posted on | June 5, 2011 | No Comments
The Local East Village has reported that Luca Bar, a European bar/restaurant on St. Mark’s has been seized by the state for owing more than $31K in back taxes.
I ate there once & had a totally forgettable meal, so I’m not sad to see the place go. I am, however, crossing my fingers that the place reopens as I have an unused Groupon worth 30 bucks… More news as it surfaces.

I realize that this is a blog about East Village, NYC food, but I do sometimes post from other areas, such as Brooklyn, etc. So why, you might ask, am I reviewing a seafood restaurant in Denver, Colorado? Well, because I love the food there & make a point of going at least once every time I’m in Denver. Read more
Discounts At Discovery Wines
Posted on | May 26, 2011 | No Comments
Discovery Wines will spend it’s last day at it’s current location this Saturday. They plan on reopening at 16 Avenue B (at 2nd Street) on July 1st.
In an effort to unload stock before the move, Discovery are offering 30% off of purchases of 12 bottles or more. They’ve also marked down several bottles by 25%, look for the orange tags.
Personally, I loved the Avenue A location, but I’m looking forward to having them one block closer to my house!!!
