Ruby’s Bar & Grill to close

Posted on | November 3, 2010 | 2 Comments

In a further show of developer’s inability to mix the old & the new Ruby’s (1213 Riegelmann Boardwalk) will be shuttered for good in 2 weeks.  It’s already closed for the season, but it’ll never open again.  I reviewed it back in August & I can honestly say that I’m really going to miss this place.  It was my designated pre-Brooklyn Cyclones game drink spot & I loved the mean old bartenders & insanely inexpensive drinks.  Coney Island favorite, Shoot The Freak, has also bit the dust.  A real shame.  Grub Street reports that 9 businesses didn’t make the cut & that Ruby’s will be replaced by a sports bar.  Great.

Fresh coat of paint for Zaitzeff?

Posted on | November 2, 2010 | No Comments

Maybe I’m losing my mind, but I could have sworn that super-duper awesome East Village burger spot Zaitzeff had a black/dark facade. I walked by today & this is what it looks like now.  Feng Shui maybe?  I’m not sure, nor do I think it’s more enticing.  The burgers there, however, are really freakin’ good (read my review).

Mercadito

Posted on | November 2, 2010 | No Comments

The details on this post might be slightly sketchy because I’m recounting events from several weeks ago, but here goes…  I went for an impromptu dinner with 3 buddies to Mercadito (179 Avenue B between 11th & 12th street) for some upscale Mexican food.  It was early & the place wasn’t heaving yet (it can get pretty busy), so we snagged a seat by the open front doors. This Saturday, November 6th from 2-4pm, Keith Beavers (a.k.a East Village Wine Geek), patriarch of Alphabet Wine Company & partner in the Italian eatery In Vino (215 East 4th Street Between Avenue A and B) will be hosting a 2 hour talk/tasting about wines & why we enjoy them so much.  Keith is very enthusiastic about wine & has the knowledge to back it up, tickets are $30 (register here).

From the email:

HELLO LOVERS OF WINE!  How is wine made?  How do I taste wine?  What are tannins?  Join me as I walk you through the wonderful world of wine with WINE 101: THE USUAL SUSPECTS.

We will swirl and sip some of the more well known varietals on the market today and get down to the nitty gritty of how we enjoy wine!

Yakiniku West

Posted on | November 1, 2010 | 2 Comments

A few weeks ago, a group of drunks & foodies (I fall into both categories) descended on 9th street to eat, booze & celebrate Dan‘s birthday at Yakiniku West (218 East 9th St. between 2nd & 3rd Avenue). Yakiniku is a Japanese Steakhouse, complete with a no shoe policy, loads of wood paneling, sunken seating & the omnipresent in-table hibachi grill. Read more

Happy Halloween!

Luke’s Lobster (review here) is offering 10% off rolls & combo meals if you come dressed as a lobster, crab or shrimp (babies & pets included)!  This discount applies to both locations.  I doubt they make Empress crab claw or clam chowder outfits but who knows!

On a side note, this is Luke’s last weekend at Hester Street Fair, so go check them out!

Kafana

Posted on | October 29, 2010 | No Comments

Serbian food really isn’t a cuisine that I know much about or search out, but I’m always eager to try new things which is why I’m glad that we have Kafana (116 Avenue C between 7th & 8th street).  I reviewed Kafana back in 2008 on my previous blog Thursday Club NYC & had thoroughly enjoyed the meals that I had there.  It’s been quite a while, so I decided to go back & try some of the smaller dishes. What’s going on at East Village Cheese?

Posted on | October 22, 2010 | 4 Comments

I went to East Village Cheese (review here) a few days ago to stock up on a few staples & I can’t help but think that something has changed there. A few staples that myself & other family members buy (Boursin & Saga blue cheese, both running at an insanely cheap $1.50 for 8oz.) are no longer stocked & the place just feels, well, different.

The rumor mill (my father) is abound with theories that the store was bought out recently, but I’m not sure what to believe.  I did some fact checking (Googling) & all sources tell me that Thupten Tenphel and Lobsang Tsultrim are still owners of the joint.  Am I being cray-cray here or has anyone else seen a bit of a change at the shop?

Pardon The Mess

Posted on | October 22, 2010 | No Comments

I’ve finally moved to the self-hosted WordPress platform (something I should have done from day one, apparently Momma did raise a fool) so the site is looking kinda funky right now.

I’m going to pay someone to fix it up all purdy as soon as possible, so I’m sorry for any broken links, HTML errors & the like during this messy process.

Coast To Coast Wine Dinner at 6th St. Kitchen

Posted on | October 21, 2010 | 1 Comment

6th St. Kitchen will be hosting a 7 (yes, seven!) course tasting with wine pairing featuring new wines on the menu on Tuesday November 2nd.  Dishes include Pork Loin, Rock Shrimp, Braised Short Ribs (Yum) & more…

From the press release:

On November 2nd, 6th Street Kitchen will hosting a special “Coast to  Coast” wine dinner to sample some of the new wines that will be added to  our current wine list. The dinner will consist of seven courses with  wine pairings for each course. International wines will be paired with  “All-American” dishes. Wondering why I said “All-American?” We’re going  to be playing with tradition. I’ve attached a picture of the dessert:  “Ants on a Log” — it may look like an after-school snack but this is  actually a peanut butter mousse with celery gremolata and raisins.

The wine dinner is $80/person and starts at 8pm. Space is limited so  reservations are required. Please call (212) 477-4649 or e-mail us at info@6thStreetKitchen.com.
