Kafana Revisited

Kafana

I reviewed Kafana for the first time about a year ago & it has become a place that I eat at regularly.  I’ll admit that I didn’t know much about Serbian food back then & I feel like I’m in a better position to talk about the dishes there.  The restaurant serves up a lot of heavy dishes (possibly best suited for cold winter nights), but it does have some lighter seafood & vegetarian options. Nam Son Vietnamese Restaurant

Posted on | September 13, 2011 | No Comments

Nam Son Vietnamese RestaurantI don’t eat in Chinatown very often & when I do, it’s normally at a Chinese restaurant, but I’ve passed Nam Son so many times while shopping around Grand Street that I decided to finally give it a go.  I’ve been to Vietnam once & admit that I don’t know much about the cuisine.  I’ve had Pho (perhaps what Vietnam is best known for) several times, so I was excited to see what else they had on offer. Kasadela

Kasadela ExteriorHonestly, when I think of I traditional Japanese food in the East Village, Avenue C doesn’t immediately come to mind. I’d been a regular at the restaurant years ago & pretty much forgotten about it until last week.  Luckily the food is still as good as I remember.

Miso Soup at KasadelaNestled in an area where you’re more likely to find bars & the occasional dodgy Chinese takeout spot, Kasadela is an Izakaya; serving a wide variety of inexpensive food, the kind of after-work spot that you always see in movies.  We arrived around 6:30 on a Monday to try some of the the Happy Hour specials that they offer during the week.  The Miso Soup was a lot darker than I’m used to, but it was good. Eataly

Eataly InteriorEataly opened with much fanfare a year ago, but I decided to hold off & wait. Luckily Hurricane Irene had everyone running scared this weekend, so I decided to head there on Monday in the hope that it would be pretty empty.  Even though they were celebrating their 1 year anniversary with deep discounts on 44 items in the Market & Wine Shop, the place was pretty quiet. Maharlika

Maharlika InteriorI’ve never eaten Filipino food before, so I was really pleased when I read Immaculate Infatuation’s review of Maharlika, a brand new restaurant on 7th St. Originally a pop-up brunch spot on 12th street, they’ve finally got their own space & are serving dinner 7 days a week & brunch on the weekends (lunch service coming this week).

It was early on a Friday afternoon & besides an older gentleman we were the only customers.  We arrived during happy hour so beers were only $3 (there is a cocktail menu too).  The menu is split into sections; small plates designed to be shared, sides, sizzling plates (pretty self-explanatory), plates with garlic rice &  egg and finally main dishes with white rice.  Most had names that I didn’t even attempt to pronounce, but were described well. Mussels at AffaireLast Thursday, Nearsay teamed up with French restaurant/lounge Affaire to host a mussels cooking demo & meetup for local bloggers.  Located in a sprawling space that once housed #1 Chinese & China 1, Affaire still has some remnants of it’s Asian past while the menu is classic French. Wok+Wine

Shrimp at Wok & Wine NYCI had the extreme pleasure of bringing my Mom to a Foodspotting and Wok+Wine event held at the offices of Luminary Labs in Tribeca.  I didn’t know anything about W+W, but I’m an avid Foodspotting user, so I wasn’t going to pass this opportunity up.  After doing a bit of research online, I found out that W+W is the brainchild of Peter Mandeno & is basically a way for people to get together & network.  A quote from the website sums it up: ‘40 people, 40 pounds of jumbo shrimp and 40 bottles of delicious wine!Read more

Yvonne’s Jamaican Food Truck

Posted on | August 20, 2011 | No Comments

Yvonne YvonneFood trucks are all the rage now, but back in the day when I was growing up on the Upper East Side there was one truck that I went to several times a month.  Yvonne’s Jamaican Food Truck serves up amazing Jamaican & Caribbean food around lunchtime on weekdays.  The dishes are very simple, but absolutely packed with flavor.  They can run a bit on the spicy side, but any Jamaican would want it just that way.
