East Village Represented At Meatopia
Posted on | May 26, 2011 | No Comments
Grub Street recently released the extensive lineup of chefs at this years Meatopia, the self-proclaimed ” Woodstock of Edible Animals” taking place at Brooklyn Bridge Park on July 23rd. Eduard Frauneder, the chef at Edi & The Wolf, will be the only East Village chef participating, but don’t let that deter you. I’m looking forward to offerings from Scott Smith, Brad Farmerie & April Bloomfield.
Organizer Josh Ozersky, aka Mr. Cutlets, is trying to procure a whole buffalo for chef Mike Cirino of A Razor, A Shiny Knife (click for a video of the 6 course meal he served on the L train recently), that would be worth the price of admission by itself.
Tickets for the event, which takes place at Brooklyn Bridge Park July 23, are going for $85 (for unlimited tastings), $130 (for that plus unlimited beer and a T-shirt), and $195 (for that plus an hour of early access and VIP access).
Get your tickets here.
Yakiniku West Revisited
Posted on | May 25, 2011 | 2 Comments
It’s been several months since I’ve been back to Yakinuki West (review here) so I decided to return with some friends & give the place another try. After removing our shoes, we got a pretty sweet spot towards the back of the restaurant & ordered some beer. I’ve been here several times before, so I decided to be more ‘adventurous’ with the food I ordered. Read more
The Farm On Adderley

It takes a lot to get me out of the East Village, but a trip into Brooklyn takes a lot of coaxing. A friend invited me to his ‘hood (Ditmas Park) for lunch I decided that I’d give it a shot. After a surprisingly painless trip on the L & Q trains, I arrived at a really good looking restaurant with an awesome garden area & a fully stocked bar (Thank God). It wasn’t busy yet so we got a pretty choice seat & scanned the menu. Read more
Verso

So, Verso had their opening last night (see EVGrieve), so I went by today to see what was going on. Formerly Caffee Pepe Rosso (which I loved), then Caffe Cotto (not so much), the space was completely gutted & rebuilt from the ground up. I stopped by around 4 o’clock thinking the place was open, but they were having some problems with the POS system. I returned later with my buddy Dan (after some drinks at Duke’s next door) & the meal commenced. Read more
Satsko Now Serving Brunch
Posted on | May 15, 2011 | No Comments
Well, it’s not really breaking news, but for the past few months Sake Bar Satsko (review) has been serving brunch on the weekends (not many people seem to know this). I had a chance to go with some friends, so here’s the rundown. The brunch menu at Satsko is a smaller version of their regular menu with a few additions such as ‘Omrice’ (which I had, more on that later), Eggs Benedict, Buttermilk Pancakes, Bagels & more. Burgers (both beef & tuna) have been on the menu for a while & those are included in the brunch offerings. Read more
Sunny & Annie

I doubt that there’s an East Village resident that at hasn’t bought a sandwich from Sunny & Annie whether it was on the way home from work, or stumbling around drunk on Avenue B. My first experience with Sunny & Annie was in late 2001 when I needed some milk. I figured that it was just a regular bodega but when I saw the massive hand-scribbled menu on the counter I figured I’d get a sandwich too. Read more

New Owners For Acme Bar & Grill
Posted on | May 13, 2011 | 1 Comment
At the end of March I mentioned that Acme Bar & Grill, the 25 year old Southern Food joint, closed abruptly for renovations. The owner, Bob Pollock, claimed that the restaurant would reopen, but I had my doubts (particularly when you look at the demo pictures)
Well, now it’s confirmed; both Grub Street & Zagat Buzz report that the team behind Indochine & Kittichai (both respected restaurants with Asian roots) will be taking over the bi-level space at 9 Great Jones St.
Surprise, surprise, they’ll be reopening as a more upscale restaurant (most likely catering to the boutique hotels in the area) with a farm to table concept. I’m all for new restaurants, but I’ll really miss the casual atmosphere, great fried chicken & monstrously boozy margaritas. More news as it becomes available.
Update (3/22/12): My review here.
Update (1/22/12): I still haven’t been yet, but head over to NYC Tastes for a thorough review of Acme.

Takahachi Continues To Impress
Posted on | May 12, 2011 | No Comments
I’ve never been shy about how much I love Takahachi, it’s by far my favorite spot in the East Village when I’m craving some fresh raw fish. I’ve been going there pretty much ever since I moved to the East Village 10 years ago & it’s been the go to sushi spot for me & most of my friends. Recently, however, I’ve been on a major sushi kick & have been spending more time than usual there. Even after 10 years, they’ve found a way to keep the menu exciting, no small feat. Read more
New name & more for former Caffe Cotto
Posted on | May 11, 2011 | No Comments
We’ve been eagerly watching 127 Avenue C which was formerly Caffe Cotto (& Cafe Pepe Rosso before that) & I passed by today only to find that they now have a new name; Verso. I wasn’t able to take a peek inside as workers were blocking the doorway, but there seems to b a lot of new tile work & what looked a lot like a bar running up the right side of the restaurant. I’ll keep you guys updated.
Update: Verso is now open.
Economy Candy
Posted on | May 11, 2011 | No Comments
Ok, so everyone says that the economy is in the toilet, but when it comes to Economy Candy in the LES, it seems like business is booming. I’ve passed this place a billion times, but I finally decided to stop in after reading Vivienne Gucwa’s excellent post on Nearsay. I’ve heard great things about the place, but I really wasn’t prepared for what I found inside. Read more
