Coal Yard

Posted on | December 5, 2010 | 3 Comments

I had mentioned back in mid-October that Lilly Coogan’s was being re-opened as Coal Yard (102 First Avenue @ 6th Street), well they’ve been open for more than a month & the Yard has quickly become one of my favorite bars in the East Village.  I figure it’s about time I reviewed bars & this is as good a place to start as any. Making The Korzo Burger

Posted on | December 4, 2010 | 2 Comments

You may have read my recent review of Korzo Haus (178 East 7th St. @ Avenue B), but I’d like to take a little time to talk in-depth about the Korzo Burger, a delicious deep fried cheeseburger that seems to be a favorite there.  The menu changes almost daily, but due to it’s popularity, the Korzo Burger is never off of the menu.  The process is not very complicated, but they put great care into both the making & ingredients of this bundle of joy. Korzo Haus

Korzo Haus East VillageIt’s been a while since I’ve talked about the work going on at the old Mohamed’s Falafel Star, so it’s about time that I reviewed Korzo Haus (178 East 7th St. @ Avenue B), one of the newer additions to East Village dining.  Don’t let the exterior (which I really don’t care for) fool you, the food inside is really damn good.  It’s a small space with plenty of wood (both the walls & seating) & 2 signature beers produced by Peak Organic on tap. Gemma

Gemma ExteriorI’m always up for a free meal, so when my buddy Todd called me & said that he was going to Gemma (335 Bowery at 3rd street in the Bowery Hotel) on his boss’ dime, I didn’t hesitate.  I’ve been wanting to go here for some time, I remember when the space was a filthy old gas station, now it’s a fancy hotel.  Not that I’m complaining as free Italian food never hurt anyone. Royale Revisited

Posted on | November 12, 2010 | No Comments

Trolling along Avenue C & looking for something to eat, I decided to stop by my old haunt Royale (157 Avenue C @ 10th Street review here).  I haven’t been there in several months & I wanted to see if there have been any changes there. Read more

Lure Fishbar

Posted on | November 12, 2010 | No Comments

I’m never one to shy away from trying a new restaurant (unless it’s out of my comfort zone –I’m talking to you Upper West Side!), so when I got an email from Tasting Table about a Late Brunch they were sponsoring along with Stella Artois, I jumped at the chance. Lure Fishbar (142 Mercer Street at Prince) was the location for the October 2nd Event. Read more

Mõtek (CLOSED)

Posted on | November 11, 2010 | 2 Comments

I really don’t spend much time on Saint Marks Place, so I was really surprised to stumble on Mõtek (125 Saint Marks Place at Avenue A).  Mõtek serves coffee & sandwiches, but the real draw are the crepes; available in both sweet & savory variations.

The place looks brand spanking new, but the guy behind the counter assured me that they’ve been open for about 3 months.  It’s a small space with a large service area, a tiny table in the back & a few stools & a counter to eat at along the other wall. Read more

Bar Food At East Village Tavern

Posted on | November 10, 2010 | 1 Comment

I recently went to East Village Tavern (158 Avenue C at 10th Street) for the first time a few days ago.  It had been a French-Japanese fusion restaurant several years ago, but the space has been gutted & there is a brand new bar with a much more open feel.  I was there for my darts league, so I was mainly there for the booze.  They have a rotation of 16 American beers on tap; Allagash White & Captain Lawrence Pale are a few that I do know. Polpettone from Frank Restaurant

Posted on | November 5, 2010 | 2 Comments

Polpettone from Frank RestaurantI felt the need to add this post as I won Frank Restaurant’s daily lunch giveaway (@frankrestauant on twitter), if you’re the first to retweet, you get a free lunch.  I’m literally devouring it right now & typing in between bites.  Polpettone is basically a rolled meatloaf, Frank serves it with a marinara sauce & mashed potatoes.

The mash is extremely creamy (in a good way), & is so smooth that I think they ran the potatoes in a ricer.  The meatloaf is a little on the bland side, I got hints of oregano but that was about it.  Honestly, I think it could have done with more garlic & maybe some seasoning salt.  The marinara was good, but nothing to rave about.  The portion size is large (2 gigantic meatballs) & it was served with Frank’s excellent, crusty, bread (not pictured).  I love the food at Frank & a free lunch always goes down well!

Brunch At VBar

Posted on | November 5, 2010 | 3 Comments

VBarShortly after attempting to go to the Grub Street Food Festival, a friend & I spent ages trying to find a brunch spot in the LES, Schiller’s, Essex Restaurant & Spitzer’s Corner were all Ram Jam, so we ended up at Vbar (132 1st Avenue at Saint Marks Place)Bar.  A complete disaster ensued.  VBar is a very good looking restaurant, sun-filled with loads of windows, exposed brick & a great view of passers-by on 1st Avenue.  Once you get to the food & drink however, he charm completely disappears.
