Restaurant Week

Ok, it might have started a few days ago & I’m obviously playing catch up, but there are some great dining options in the East Village for this year’s Restaurant Week. For those who aren’t familiar (Really? Been by a bus stop lately?), this is an annual event that gives us regular folk a chance to get three courses at some of the city’s best restaurants at a reasonable price.
Obviously, the East Village is no slouch in the food department & there are some great options this year:
Apiary (American New): 60 Third Avenue
DBGB Kitchen & Bar (French): 299 Bowery
Empellón Cocina (Mexican): 105 First Avenue
Fonda (Mexican): 40 Avenue B
Goat Town (American New, coverage): 511 East 5th Street
Yerba Buena (Pan-Latin): 23 Avenue A
While these are the restaurants listed within the East Village, we all know that there are no set boundaries, so don’t forget: Preserve 24, Indochine and plenty of other restaurants in the Lower East Side & surrounding areas.
Check out NYC Go for all participating restaurants.

Jeepney Joins The Bottomless Brunch Crowd
Posted on | February 13, 2014 | 1 Comment
Filipino gastropub, Jeepney, has introduced a bottomless brunch on weekends 2 hours of booze and an entree for $29. I’m big fan of Jeepney (as well as it’s sister restaurant, Maharlika) and I do love to get drunk, so this is a nice addition.
It seems like a lot of East Village restaurants are offering bottomless brunch options: Idle Hands, Poco & Virage are but a few. There’s a pretty decent Yelp list here.
Jeepney: 201 1st Avenue at 12th street.

“Dinner in a Bakery” at Zucker Bakery
Posted on | February 12, 2014 | No Comments
Zucker Bakery will be offering 3 course meals every Friday night (6:30-11pm). The bakery has teamed up with the guys at Professor Radish and will offer 3 courses for $45. Popular dishes include the Roasted Radish Salad and the “Spaghetti & Meatballs”; the meatballs are made with walnuts (even carnivores are fooled) and the spaghetti is made from squash. The bakery is rather small so reservations are recommended (404.281.3606), but walk-ins are accepted. The meal is BYOB ($5 corkage fee).
There is also a special 6 course menu for Valentine’s Day.
Zucker Bakery: 433 East 9th Street
Yuji Ramen (Closed)
Posted on | February 9, 2014 | No Comments
A friend had been telling me about this place for a while — I rarely shop at Whole Foods & had never been to the food court upstairs, but it seems that I have been missing out on a whole lot. Started as a pop-up in the back of a brooklyn bar, Yuji has been pushing the boundaries of ramen with experimental flavors for nearly two years. They specialize in Mazeman which is just like your typical ramen, minus the broth, but they do have a Shoyu option for traditionalists.
The regular mazeman menu includes Salmon & Cheese (not so sure about this, but it’s probably delicious), Bacon & Egg and Miso Roasted Vegetable. Once I saw the Uni (Sea Urchin) Miso, it was a no-brainer.
Honestly, I could eat sea urchin all day long, every day of the week. Some people aren’t into the texture, but I can’t get enough of the stuff. I was really impressed by the dish; This is my first mazeman & I had worried that it would be too dry, but the creaminess of the sea urchin was perfect. My only real gripe with the dish was the bowl it was served in. I’m a notoriously slow eater, so towards the end of my meal, the noodles were sticking to the cardboard (not sure what else to call them) bowls. Probably not a problem for people who eat at normal speed.
If you’re looking for a massive, filling meal (which is normally the case with ramen), this isn’t the place for you. The portion sizes are rather small & the lack of broth (if you order the mazeman) might leave you a bit peckish. From a flavor perspective, Yuji Ramen totally gets my seal of approval, I’ll be going back to get the Bacon & Egg mazeman.
Yuji Ramen: 95 East Houston Street, 2nd floor mezzanine
