Totto Ramen
Posted on | May 12, 2012 | No Comments
It’s no real secret that I’m a huge Ramen fan, but I don’t often venture far out of the East Village. A few weeks ago, I was going to a show at Terminal 5, so it was the perfect opportunity to head uptown & check out Totto Ramen. I’ve heard horror stories about massive lines & long wait times, but luckily we were in there after about 5 minutes, just as it started to rain. Read more

Cinco de Mayo Derby at Idle Hands Bar
Posted on | May 4, 2012 | 1 Comment
If you haven’t been able to deduct from the title, tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo and also the Kentucky Derby. Cinco de Mayo is normally seen as a celebration of Mexican pride & heritage or the anniversary of the unlikely win at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. For a non-Mexican like myself, it’s normally just an excuse to drink a lot of Tequila. I’ve always seen the Kentucky Derby as an opportunity for people to wear silly hats & drink Mint Juleps (I would have added betting on horses, but we don’t have OTBs here any more).
Idle Hands, my favorite bourbon & whiskey bar, has found a happy medium. They’ve teamed up with Time Out Offers to put together an awesome event. For $24 you get great food from That Burger Tent: 1 burger (including the one-off Cinco de Burger), tater-tots or fries & two dipping sauces. From the bar, you can get a margarita or a Mint Julep & all-you-can-drink Pacifico or Lone Star beer for 90 minutes.
I’ve had burgers from That Burger Tent & they’re pretty damn tasty. I’m interested in trying out this new incarnation. If you haven’t been to Idle Hands, this is a perfect opportunity.
If you can’t make the event tomorrow, tickets are available for Sunday too. Get your tickets here.
Idle Hand Bar: 25 Avenue B between 2nd & 3rd St.
Sa Aming Nayon (Closed)

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m no expert in Filipino food, in fact, my visit to Maharlika last year was the only time I’ve ever tried the cuisine. I had heard good things about the food there & was feeling adventurous had a coupon to use, so I decided to give Sa Aming Nayon a shot.
We arrived pretty early on a Friday night & besides the staff (it seems family run) & one other table, the place was pretty empty. The decor is pretty basic & we were seated in the back dining room by the garden (I’m not sure if they serve food out there in the summer). I ordered a Filipino beer & took a look at the menu. Brunch at The Cardinal
Posted on | April 26, 2012 | 2 Comments
I’ve been eating a lot of Southern & Soul food lately, helped in part by a bunch of new restaurants springing up in the East Village. The Cardinal opened in late August 2011, but I never got the chance to eat there till now. Located in the space formerly held by Thai restaurant Amaya, they’ve totally redone the space. White walls with the kitchen and a few tables upstairs, there’s more seating in the basement. It was a sunny afternoon when we went, so we waited for a seat upstairs by the windows. Read more

Taste of the Lower East Side
Posted on | April 25, 2012 | 1 Comment
I’m not sure how this got under my radar, but tomorrow night is the 12th Annual Taste of the Lower East Side benefiting the Grand St. Settlement. General Admission tickets are currently $175 and will be $200 on the door. This may seem a bit steep, but Grand St. Settlement provides crucial services for low income families & individuals for nearly 100 years. If that doesn’t convince you, wait till you see the list of restaurants that will be participating. There are way too many to list, but it’s basically a who’s who of food in the Lower East Side.
Places that I’ve been to & are participating include; Zoe, Vandaag, Gemma, Goat Town, Maharlika & Northern Spy Food Co. There are loads more, so not only are you donating to an amazing non-profit, but you’ll also be guaranteed some of the best food that this diverse area has to offer.
Tickets available here. General Admission from 7pm.
Taste of the Lower East Side: 82 Mercer St. between Broome & Spring.
