Toucan & The Lion Revisited
Posted on | March 1, 2012 | 2 Comments
I first visited back in December (review) and tried a few dishes from what I thought was the full menu. It turns out that that was just the tip of the iceberg & the complete menu is now in full swing. Not much has changed, but there are now 8 shared plates, 5 mains, 5 sides & a few desserts. Read more
J. B. Prince
Posted on | February 21, 2012 | No Comments
Most chefs swear by their knives & recently a close friend was looking for a new chef’s knife for his girlfriend. Initially I suggested Broadway Pandhandler, but chef Steven Reese threw J B Prince into the mix. I had never been there or heard of it before, but I was amazed by the selection of wares in what is basically an unassuming office building. Read more
City Crab & Seafood Company
Posted on | February 15, 2012 | No Comments
City Crab has a special place in my heart, it’s a massive two floor restaurant where I’ve enjoyed seafood for the best of 10 years. Before I really ‘got into’ food, I learned the basics about seafood here. The restaurant has a pretty typical ‘old-school seafood restaurant’ vibe; wood paneling, high tables & the obligatory tank full of lobsters. There’s also plenty of oysters on display where Juan has been shucking for as long as I can remember. Most of the clientele are from the nearby offices, but if you sit at the bar, you’re likely to run into some ‘locals’. Read more

Posted on | February 15, 2012 | No Comments
A friend passed by the former Teriyaki Boy on East 10th street yesterday to find Rai Rai Ken (review here) signage being installed. There’s no news if they’re moving the current location or expanding (the new space is much larger). More news as it comes in.

Kambi Ramen House Revisited
Posted on | January 22, 2012 | 1 Comment
With the weather being so hellishly cold recently (don’t get me started on the snow), I thought it would be a good idea to take another look at Kambi Ramen House. I know that Minca is much more centrally placed in the East Village & that the menus are basically the same, but Kambi does have it’s added charms. Read more
The Meatball Factory (Closed)
Posted on | January 19, 2012 | 1 Comment
Meatballs seem to be ‘trending’ right now, so when I got an invite from McKenzie of MMMGuide to sample some of the food at The Meatball Factory, she didn’t have to ask me twice. The ‘Factory’ opened about 3 months ago & serves salad, pizzas, fettuccine & obviously meatballs. Read more

I tend to keep my ears open about new restaurants whenever possible, so after the closure of Singa’s Famous Pizza a few months ago, I was hoping that something would quickly take it’s place. It took 10 months, but now we have a new lunch & supper spot (brunch in the works) on Avenue C. Named after a species of quail, Bobwhite opened a few days ago & specializes in a few plates: chicken, sandwiches & sides.

Akter Grocery Busted On New Year’s Eve
Posted on | January 2, 2012 | 1 Comment
Akter Grocery, a relatively new bodega in the East Village was raided by cops on New Year’s Eve. I passed by around 10:30 & there were several squad cars on the block & cops were confiscating beer. Apparently they were selling to minors and also operating with an expired beer license. They had just received a beer delivery that day & hundreds of cases were taken by the NYPD. More info as it comes in.
Update 03/03/12: They’ve been busted again.
Akter Grocery: 106 Avenue B
