Turkey Leg Ball 2011
Posted on | December 5, 2011 | 1 Comment
If you don’t read Immaculate Infatuation or have their iPhone app, there’s something seriously wrong with you. Stang & Steinthal were back with a vengeance this year & threw one heck of a party, the Turkey Ball 2011 was held at Hudson Terrace & 600 hungry New Yorkers descended on the spot.
The food was provided by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Events & obviously turkey legs featured heavily on the menu. With awesome NYC & NJ skyline views, the 2-level space did not disappoint.

With Immaculate Infatuation‘s Turkey Leg Ball jumping off tonight at 7:30, I’d be doing myself a disservice if I didn’t recap last year’s awesome event that they hosted with Cooking Channel. Back in 2010 I really wasn’t clued up that much on food event etiquette & made a few rookie mistakes (not to be repeated this year). The event last year was on Nov 17th, so Thanksgiving was in the air (see the chocolate turkey & pumpkin soup which we’ll discuss later). The space was awesome, with amazing views on NYC & NJ skylines. Read more
FAB’s East Village Eats Tasting Tour Recap
Posted on | November 30, 2011 | 3 Comments
Although being postponed for a few months & having to try to outdo the 2010 event, this year’s East Village Eats Tour run by Fourth Arts Block did not disappoint. I realize that I’m a few weeks late, but I had such a great time that the memories & flavors are still fresh in my mind. We lost a few vendors this year: S’mac, Nicky’s Vietnamese Sandwiches, Tuck Shop & Nomad to name a few. There were also a lot of great additions that more than made up for it: Destination Bar & Grille, FAB Cafe, Hench en Dumbo, Idle Hands, Oaxaca & Swift. Read more

In Vino Hosts Wine To The People
Posted on | November 14, 2011 | No Comments
Keith Beavers (aka East Village Wine Geek), the mastermind behind Alphabet City Wine Co. will be hosting a wine tasting at his East Village restaurant In Vino. This Saturday, November 19th from 2-4pm, you can sample 6 wines from Campania. I know Keith & he knows wine, so this should be a don’t miss event. tickets are $30.
Campania is home to a list of some of the most diverse wines in Italy. In addition to being the birthplace of pizza, mozzarella di bufala and Limoncello, the legacy of the vine also reigns supreme. Once the backyard of the Roman elite these grapes almost went into extinction until two families revived the land.
Join me as we explore this amazing wine region!
It’s getting colder out there and it is time for wines that warm the soul.
I’ll have six wines, some rustic bread and olive oil and a nice cheese spread for ya!
Read Keith’s awesome wine blog here.
In Vino: 215 East 4th Street between Avenue A & B.
Alphabet City Wine Company: 100 Avenue C between 6th & 7th Street.

The Mighty McRib
Posted on | November 6, 2011 | 2 Comments
Personally, I hate McDonald’s. I do, however, appreciate Ray Kroc’s vision in taking a page out of Henry Ford’s playbook & turning restaurants basically into Model T assembly lines. Open Kitchens (Degustation, Cafe Gray, Peasant, etc.)? Ray Kroc invented that. My main gripe with McDonald’s is that I’m fundamentally opposed to fast-food & my local McDonald’s (102 1st Avenue) is possibly the worst branch ever. Staffed by dimwits (not all of them) & besieged by OAPs & beggars, it’s just a really horrible experience. And I haven’t even mentioned the McGriddle yet. So when I see commercials pimping out the McRib I tend to cringe, but oddly I’m fascinated. Read more

The Toucan & The Lion Coming to the East Village?

I passed by the former Mara’s Homemade spot at 342 East 6th Street yesterday & a worker was busy painting the exterior (primer possibly?). I cannot confirm the association with Artichoke Pizza, but my spies tell me it’s going to be an Asian gastropub. More news as it develops.

Tsampa

This particular area of 9th Street is packed with restaurants that I really enjoy (Yakiniku West, Village Yokocho & Otafuku, just to name a few), so after yet another failed attempt to eat at Ippudo (2 hour wait!), Tsampa beat off the competition. The ‘Zen’ decor is the first thing that strikes you, the place looks great with loads of exposed brick & wood. I’ve never eaten Tibetan food, so I can honestly say that I was exciting. I was dining with a vegetarian too & Tsampa’s menu does have a lot of vegetarian options. Read more
