Pongsri Thai Restaurant
Posted on | January 18, 2011 | 2 Comments
There are very few reasons to leave my beloved East Village, but the promise of a workday lunch with my sister had to trekking up to Chelsea. She chose the venue, so we headed to Pongsri (165 West 23rd St. at 7th Avenue). From the outside, it looks like any bland midtown lunch spot. Once indoors, the interior followed suit & the food wasn’t very far behind. Read more
Free Meatballs?
Posted on | January 17, 2011 | No Comments
So I come home late last night after an epic 7 course Thursday Club NYC meal (on a Sunday when the Jets won no less!) & I collect my mail that has been festering in my mailbox for days. Most of it is useless; bank statements, bills, junk mail etc. Then something jumps out at me; ‘free meatballs.‘ I’m pretty cross-eyed by now & my glasses are most likely covered in mole from my recent meal, but I’m intrigued.
Turns out that some dude (Greg McHale) at Corcoran has teamed up with In Vino (215 East 4th Street between Ave. A & B), a restaurant that I love (get the lasagna) to offer up a free Polpette al Ragu with the purchase of any Pasta or Secondi if you bring the card in. I’m all up for free balls, but does he expect me to sell my apartment or buy another one? I’m not sure. Once I turn the card in, I’ll have lost his number anyway.
Dessert at Vandaag (Closed)

I was searching Googling for a place to bring a few family members for a late coffee & dessert around New Year’s & Vandaag ended up at the top of the pile. I’ve been there for lunch & dinner before, but I was worried that they’d be packed. It was still busy but luckily for us, there was a table available. Read more
Fu Sushi (CLOSED)

Although I sing the praises of Takahachi, Fu Sushi is another great sushi spot in the East Village. It’s normally not packed to the gills, the staff are friendly & they serve up great food. I’ve been there a bunch of times, so basically here’s a rundown of what’s on offer. Read more
New Year’s Eve at Goat Town
Posted on | January 10, 2011 | 2 Comments
I normally just write off New Year’s Eve as a night where the city will be full of drunken idiots & nothing spectacular would happen. This time, I decided to change the game up, at the last minute & with no reservations I went to Goat Town (511 East 5th Street between Ave. A & B) an East Village newcomer. Housed in the former Seymour Burton/Butcher Bay space, Goat Town is owned by the same dude as The General Greene in Fort Greene & helmed by Chef Joel Hough. Read more
JoeDoe’s ‘Prepared Beers’ Get a nod from Bruni
Posted on | January 8, 2011 | 2 Comments
Frank Bruni of the NY Times Dining & Wine section gave 2 thumbs up to JoeDoe‘s (45 East 1st Street between 1st & 2nd Avenue) beer cocktails, in particular, the Honey Beer Cocktail. Served in a salt-rimmed Pilsner glass, it’s made up of Dale’s Pale Ale, both lemon juice and jest & DH Krahn gin.
The Honey Beer, garnished with a lemon peel, is adult refreshment with a childish charm. Forgive it the too-cute double-entendre name.
I’ve had brunch there a few times (review here), but haven’t tried any of the cocktails (although I’ll admit that they make an amazing Bloody Mary). I also enjoy the food there, so I guess I’ll have to go back to try some of the drinks!
Má Pêche & John Dory also get nods.

I’m Glad I’m Not The Only One That Doesn’t Like Butter Lane
Posted on | January 8, 2011 | 9 Comments
I’ve been screaming to the Heavens & telling anyone who would listen about my dislike of Butter Lane‘s cupcakes. I half expected there to be a backlash due to the fact that everyone seems to love the place. Personally, I find them to be insanely sweet, not just ‘oh that’s a bit sweet‘, but more like ‘oh F*CK, my teeth are falling out!‘ On the contrary, I found quite a few people who agree with me & today even more anti Butter Lane compatriots came out of the woodwork.
EV Grieve posted a picture of a recent Citibank Poster at Union Square talking about locavores & featuring a child biting into a cupcake. Naturally in the comments section I weighed in on Butter Lane & a few other commenters agreed!
East Village Eats said… Well, if that Cupcake is from Butter Lane, I’m sure that kid’s teeth are going to fall out pretty soon.
Lisa said… I love cupcakes. I don’t like the pricey frosted grenades that pass for cupcakes now. Cup-CAKE. NOT Cup-o-FROSTING. You listening, Magnolia and Butter Lane? You need an electron microscope to see the actual dough under those Matterhorns of sugar. Ech.
blue glass said… and she had to go to the bank to take out a loan to pay for it!
Anbyone else not a fan of Butter Lane?
Xi’an Famous Foods
Posted on | January 8, 2011 | No Comments
I’ve found myself eating less & less Chinese food recently, mostly because of all of the new restaurants & flavors in the ‘hood & my belief that all Chinese restaurants serve up the same dishes. Not so with Xi’an Famous Foods (81 Saint Marks Place at 1st Avenue), a restaurant which serves food from Xi’an in Western China that is often described as a mix of Middle Eastern & Chinese food.
I had tried a small sample of their food before during Fourth Arts Block’s East Village Eats Food Tour, the Cold Skin Noodles were so spicy that my Mom & I couldn’t eat them, but I decided to give Xi’an another try. Read more
Bond St

I’m going to start by saying that this is a post about the lounge downstairs at Bond St (6 Bond Street between Broadway & Lafayette) & not the restaurant upstairs. The food comes from the same kitchen, but the dining experience can be as different as night & day (more on that later). I’ve been going to Bond St for the excellent Sushi & awesome staff, but there was a massive shake-up a few years back & all of my favorite bartenders left. Recently, I decided to go back to check the lounge out. Read more
Fire Ravages 6th Street Kitchen
Posted on | January 5, 2011 | 2 Comments
In a perfect example of how NOT to start 2011, a fire engulfed 6th Street Kitchen (507 East 6th Street between Avenue A & B) & the 2 apartments above yesterday at 7:30 am. 1 fireman was injured, but all residents got out. A second fire broke out at 9:40 am & residents were evactuated again. Representatives from the restaurant claim that it was a freak accident & are busy scrambling to get the space back in to working order. There is no news on when the restaurant will reopen.
Further coverage at EVGrieve & The Local East Village (who also take credit for the photos).
Update: The space has reopened as Purple Ginger.
