Update; 6th Street Kitchen Ravaged by Fire.
Northern Spy Gets Some NY Times Love.

The New York Times released it’s list of ‘Inexpensive Restaurants That Stood Out in 2010‘ & Northern Spy Food Co. (511 East 12th St. between A & 1st Ave. review here) made the cut. It’s already on my list of go to restaurants in the East Village, even though I’ve only been there once (a truly unfortunate fact). Congrats guys!
The menu at this Greenmarket-driven restaurant reads like a roster of favorite snacks and midnight feasts, executed with a precision honed in high-end kitchens.
Vandaag (CLOSED)

This post is just evidence of my laziness, I ate here well before Sam Sifton & plenty of other food reporters, but I’ve only just got around to writing my review. Vandaag is a Dutch restaurant & bakery that serves dishes from Northern Europe using locally (Hudson Valley region) sourced ingredients. It’s housed in the former Bounce Deuce sports bar (horrific), but the space has been totally reinvented with a modern feel & sleek design. Read more
‘Tis the Season for Delivery
Posted on | December 28, 2010 | 1 Comment
Well, I meant to post this yesterday morning when conditions were a lot worse, but I guess it’s still relevant.
With the ‘Great Blizzard of 2010’ causing havoc all over the East Village, it’s likely that several restaurants will be shuttered & honestly, I couldn’t fathom why anyone would want to be out in this mess, so here’s my recommendations for delivery options in the East Village; Read more

Satsko Wins Village Voice Nightlife Award
Posted on | December 27, 2010 | No Comments
Sake Bar Satsko (my review here) has been voted ‘Best Place for Dinner & a Hangover‘ by the Village Voice & Sound of the City. Well, actually, it tied with some place called Roberta’s, but I don’t know where or what the heck that place is & I don’t really care. I’ve been singing the praises of Satsko to anyone who’d listen (& quite a few who didn’t want to) & finally they get some much deserved recognition.
The sushi bar is one of the East Village’s hidden gems and Monday night is the night to go. Gigantic avocado rolls aside, the hole-in-the-wall restaurant boasts a million types of sake, $7 sake bombs, and most importantly, a DJ behind the bar. Cubic Zirconia’s Nick Hook plays music off his laptop with one hand while knowingly topping your drink off with the other. If the hundreds of Polaroids on the wall are any clue, the bar has become a favorite of the neighborhood – a bar for people to meet and make friends. Who needs an icebreaker when you’ve got sake bombs? Don’t expect to walk away after just one either–some combination of the jams, friendly regulars, and cozy setting makes this place virtually impossible to leave. Best of all, everyone will remember your name the next time you go back.

Village Yokocho

It’s funny how a bit of misfortune can turn into a good thing. I had hoped to take my Mom to Ippudo on 4th avenue for some ramen, but the place was packed to the gills, so we headed east & wound up eating at Village Yokocho. Not ramen, but we ended up enjoying ourselves. Read more

Korilla BBQ
Posted on | December 23, 2010 | No Comments
I’m not much of a food truck guy, but I have been loosely following the progress of the Korilla BBQ truck (@KorillaBBQ on Twitter). They don’t normally come around the East Village, but I saw a tweet that they’d be at Astor Place for dinner service so I decided that I had to go check them out. I’m partial to Korean food and love both tacos & burritos, but I’ve never had them together, so this was going to be a new experience for me. Read more
New Year’s Eve at Back Forty
Posted on | December 23, 2010 | No Comments
One of my favorite restaurants in the East Village, Back Forty (190 Avenue B @ 12th Street, coverage here) is hosting a New Year’s Eve cocktail party. $96 (tickets available here) gets you access from 9pm on New Year’s Eve. They’ll be serving up amazing Hors d’œuvres & bringing in a whole pig & a lamb!
Starting at 9pm, Back Forty will host our second annual New Year’s Eve Cocktail party. We’ll begin with a feast of nose to tail specialty hors d’oeuvres that include Wellfleet oysters on the half-shell, fresh amberjack ceviche, roasted lamb tacos and crispy pork terrine. At 10pm we’ll have a dj playing the very best of funk and soul. Each guest is also welcome to their choice of three free drinks! $96 per person, all inclusive.
Get your tickets while you can!
An Essential Cheesemonger

The Wall Street Journal published an article online a few days ago (link here) which features Anne Saxelby of Saxelby Cheesemongers pretty heavily. Her cheese shop (which is excellent I might add, but a bit pricey) is located at booth 17 of Essex Street Market (120 Essex Street @ Delancey).
It’s an interesting article about American cheese & has some funny commentary on Essex Market. If you haven’t been there, I reccommend you check it out, there are some great merchants all located under one roof.
Casa Adela

Several years ago, I was going to Casa Adela once or twice a week for lunch. I don’t go as much anymore & I honestly cannot figure out why because the food there is excellent. This Puerto Rican restaurant is sparsely decorated with 6 tables nestled in between the service & storage areas. It definitely has a family feel as you can normally find the matriarch, Adela, or other family members seated at a table peeling garlic or other vegetables. A tiny TV located above the beverage cooler is constantly tuned in to a Latino station. Read more
